Go to: http://www.historyisaweapon.com/zinnapeopleshistory.html and read Chapter 12: “Empire and the People.” As you read, consider (and take notes on) the following questions and prompts which our Socratic seminar style discussion will be based around:
1.Debate this statement: The United States consciously provoked a war with Spain in order to acquire colonies from Spain. 2.Why do you think Theodore Roosevelt wrote in 1897, “I should welcome almost any war, for I think this country needs one”? Do you think we needed a war at the turn of the century? Why, or why not? 3.What labor’s arguments against going to war with Spain? Why did most unions not oppose the war once it was declared? 4.Should the United States have intervened in the Cuban revolt? 5.Why did the U.S. government resort to such brutal treatment of the Filipinos?
